Across 801 appearances and all four divisions of the Football League, Alan Knight became Portsmouth's constant in goal. Knight, the record-setting goalkeeper known around Fratton Park as "The Legend," died in September 2026 at 65.

He was London-born and entered Portsmouth's orbit at 14 as an apprentice. Age UK Portsmouth says he signed professional terms in 1977 on his 16th birthday, then made his first-team debut the next year. That beginning grew into 683 league appearances and 801 in all between 1978 and 2000, the most games by a goalkeeper for one English club. The number measured more than endurance. Knight played for Portsmouth in every tier of the Football League and took part in three promotion campaigns. One of them, in 1986-87, restored Pompey to the top division.

The long run carried its share of sharp, lasting scenes. Knight guarded Portsmouth's goal during the club's passage to the 1991-92 FA Cup semi-finals. His 1995 testimonial brought Southampton to Fratton Park and drew 18,000 people. Portsmouth lost 5-1, but the goalkeeper supplied the home side's goal from the penalty spot. Four years later he gave The Guardian a compact summary: "We lost 5-1 but I scored the pen."

Soccerbase records Knight's final Portsmouth league appearance on January 3, 2000, a 2-1 defeat at Norwich City. Retirement moved him from the goalmouth to coaching, first with non-league Havant and Waterlooville and later in posts in the United States and England. His name even returned to a Premier League team sheet in 2004, when Harry Redknapp put him on Portsmouth's bench against Aston Villa during a goalkeeper shortage. He came back to Fratton Park to work with the goalkeepers in 2013 and later served as club ambassador, ITV News Meridian reported.

The city answered that service with honors beyond football. Knight received an honorary Master of Science degree from the University of Portsmouth in 1996 and an MBE in the 2001 New Year Honours. He entered the club's Hall of Fame in 2009, became a patron of Age UK Portsmouth in 2017 and worked as an ambassador for Pompey in the Community. In 2025, Portsmouth City Council added him to the city's roll of honorary freemen.

In supporting Portsmouth's UK City of Culture 2029 bid, Knight wrote that the city was not simply where he was from but part of who he was. The 801 matches still anchor Portsmouth's record books. So do the promotion teams, the 1992 cup run, the goalkeepers he later coached and the community institutions that carried his name as patron and ambassador. At Fratton Park, one career stretched from teenage apprentice to club elder without ever losing its center: Portsmouth.
